The fires in Yellowstone Park during the summer of 1988 appeared to be a national tragedy; yet the animals seemed unconcerned with the fires that raged all about them.  After visiting the blow down area of the Central Plateau and seeing the effects of the fire storm, I wondered when the animals viewed the terrain for the first time if somehow, they experienced the same emotions I felt.

In painting Surveying Her Damages, I strived to capture those emotions while at the same time show that the wonders of the park were intact.
